Full Value Protection | Moving Insurance

Understanding your coverage options
before your Boston move.

When you book a move, you have two coverage options — Limited Liability (free, minimal protection) or Full Value Protection (paid, comprehensive protection). Understanding the difference before your move matters. Here's how each one works in plain language.

How Full Value Protection works

1. You declare the value of your shipment

This is the maximum amount we're liable for if something is lost or damaged.

2. If an item is damaged

We will repair it, replace it with an item of like kind and quality, or compensate you for the cost of replacement. You choose which applies.

3. Additional cost applies

Full Value Protection is not free. The cost is based on the declared value of your shipment and the deductible you select. Ask your move coordinator for the current rate.

4. Limitations apply

Items packed by the customer, compressed wood items, and damage caused by natural events (fire, flood, hurricane) are not covered. High-value items over $100 per pound must be listed separately on your shipping documents.

Full Value Protection vs. third-party insurance

1. Where you get it — Full Value Protection comes directly from us as part of your move contract. Third-party insurance is purchased separately from an insurance provider before your move.

2. What it costs — FVP cost varies based on your declared shipment value and the deductible you choose. Third-party insurance premiums vary by provider and policy terms.

3. What it covers — FVP covers damage or loss caused directly by our crew during the move, up to your declared value and subject to your deductible. Third-party insurance may cover a broader range of events including those outside our control — read the policy carefully before purchasing.

Is Full Value Protection worth it?

For most moves — yes. The cost of FVP is small compared to the out-of-pocket cost of replacing a damaged sofa, TV, or appliance. Limited Liability pays 60 cents per pound — that's $6 for a 10-pound item worth $200. FVP closes that gap significantly. Ask your move coordinator for the current rate when you get your quote.

How claims are calculated

If an item is lost or damaged, we will repair it, replace it, or pay you the cost of repair or replacement — whichever applies.

Under Full Value Protection, our liability is based on $6 per pound per article. For example: a 150-pound stereo valued at $1,000 would result in a maximum payout of $900 (150 lbs × $6).

For items with an extraordinary value — anything exceeding $100 per pound — you must list them specifically on your shipping documents before the move. Unlisted high-value items may be subject to limited liability regardless of FVP selection.

Choosing your deductible

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in. A higher deductible lowers your premium — a lower deductible means you pay more upfront for the coverage but less if you file a claim.

The right deductible depends on the total value of your belongings and your risk tolerance. Ask your move coordinator to walk you through the options before your move date.

What Full Value Protection does not cover

• Items packed by the customer (not our crew) • Compressed wood items (particle board furniture) • Damage caused by fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, or other natural events • Items damaged while in storage not under our direct control • High-value items not listed on the shipping documents before the move

Limited Liability — the free default coverage

If you don't select Full Value Protection, your move is automatically covered under Limited Liability — also called "60 cents per pound" coverage. This is the minimum required by federal law under the Department of Transportation.

What it means in practice: if a 10-pound item is damaged, you receive $6.00 (10 lbs × $0.60). For most items, this is far below actual replacement value.

Limited Liability is free and requires your signature on the Bill of Lading. It's suitable if you're moving low-value items or have a separate insurance policy covering your belongings.
