Boston Moving FAQ
Common questions about moving in Boston — answered directly by the Horizon Boston Movers team. Pricing, scheduling, what to expect, and more.
How do you handle fragile or valuable items?
Our team is trained to handle fragile and valuable items with care. We use high-quality packing materials and specialized techniques — individual wrapping for glassware, picture boxes for artwork, and extra padding for antiques and electronics.
Do you provide packing services?
Yes — we offer full packing, partial packing, and fragile-only packing. Our crew brings all materials. You can add packing to any local, long distance, or commercial move when you get your quote.
What items are prohibited from being moved?
We cannot transport hazardous materials including flammable liquids, propane tanks, chemicals, paint, and explosives. For safe disposal of these items, contact your local waste management center or the City of Boston.
Can you move my pets or plants?
We recommend transporting pets and plants yourself. Pets are stressed by moving trucks, and plants can be restricted for interstate moves depending on the destination state.
Do you offer storage facilities?
Yes — we offer secure, climate-controlled storage at our Boston facility for both short and long-term needs. Storage can be combined with your move or booked separately.
How is the cost of the move calculated?
Local moves are charged hourly with a three-hour minimum. The rate depends on crew size and truck. Long distance moves are flat-rate based on inventory and destination. Final cost also depends on any add-on services like packing or storage.
What insurance options do you offer?
All moves include basic coverage. Customers can opt for Full Value Protection for higher-value items. Ask about coverage options when you get your quote.
How far in advance should I schedule my move?
For most moves, 2–4 weeks in advance is sufficient. If you're moving on or around September 1st in Boston, book as early as possible — that date fills up weeks ahead of time.
Can you move my piano or other specialty items?
Yes — we have a dedicated piano moving service for uprights, baby grands, and grand pianos. We also handle safes, artwork, antiques, and other specialty items with appropriate equipment and techniques.
Can you move my piano or other specialty items?
Yes, our team is experienced in handling pianos and other specialty items, using the necessary equipment to ensure safe transport.
Do you handle last-minute moves?
We do our best to accommodate last-minute requests. Call us at (617) 991-7677 and we'll check availability. Same-week bookings are often possible outside of peak season.
Do you handle Boston moving permits?
Yes — we file No Parking Orders with the City of Boston on your behalf. It's included with your move. We handle all Boston neighborhoods including Allston, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, South End, and more.
How do I change my moving date or other details?
Call us at (617) 991-7677 as soon as possible. We'll do our best to accommodate changes based on availability. The sooner you notify us, the more flexibility we have.
Do you provide moving supplies?
Yes — we carry boxes in multiple sizes, packing tape, packing paper, bubble wrap, mattress bags, and furniture blankets. Order with your move or arrange pickup from our Boston location.
What if some of my belongings get damaged during the move?
Notify us as soon as you notice damage. Visit our File a Claim page and fill out the form with details and photos if available. We review every claim and follow up within one to two business days.
How do you protect floors and walls during a move?
We use floor runners, door frame padding, and furniture blankets on every job. Floor and door protection is standard — not an add-on.
How long does a typical local move take?
A studio or one-bedroom typically takes 2–4 hours. A two or three-bedroom home usually runs 4–7 hours. Stairs, elevator access, parking distance, and packing all affect the total time.
Do I need to be present during the move?
We strongly recommend it — especially at the start and end of the job. If you can't be there, designate a trusted person who can make decisions and do the final walkthrough with our crew.
Is tipping the movers expected?
Tipping is not required but is appreciated for a job well done. It goes directly to the crew. The amount is entirely at your discretion.
Do you move on September 1st?
Yes — we staff up specifically for Boston's lease turnover date. It's our busiest day of the year. Book as early as possible — spots fill up weeks in advance.
Do I need to empty my drawers and cabinets before moving?
Yes — empty drawers and cabinets before move day. Loose items shift during transit and add weight that can damage furniture. Pack the contents in labeled boxes.
Can you move furniture that won't fit up the stairs?
Yes — we offer professional hoisting services for sofas, appliances, mattresses, and oversized items that can't navigate narrow Boston stairwells. We hoist from outside through a window or balcony.
What happens if the weather is bad on my moving day?
We move in all weather. Our crew uses waterproof coverings, extra floor protection, and weather-appropriate precautions. Boston weather is unpredictable — we plan for it.
How do I ensure my electronics are safely moved?
Use original packaging when possible. If you don't have it, we carry TV boxes and specialty electronics boxes. Photograph all cable connections before disconnecting so reconnecting at the new place is straightforward.
Do you work in buildings that require a certificate of insurance?
Yes — we carry full liability insurance and can provide a COI to your building manager before move day. Most Boston condo buildings and apartment complexes that require this have no issues with our coverage.
Do you offer any discounts or promotions?
We offer a $50 referral bonus when you send us a customer who completes a move. We occasionally run seasonal promotions as well. Call (617) 991-7677 or check our referral program page for current offers.
